Small Business Ideas 102: Selling Affiliate Products

In the previous article on selling custom products, I already talked about how the Internet had enabled new forms of business and commerce. This article will discuss another form of business we can set up using the Internet as the medium.

Selling affiliate products, which is commonly referred to as affiliate marketing, is a business where you sell others’ products or services and gain commission when a sale occurs as a result of your marketing effort.

How to start affiliate marketing on the Internet?

First you should have a blog with a decent number of visitors. A well visited blog is your starting point for selling affiliate products.

To attract visitors, your blog must have high quality contents. It means, your blog posts should be unique, useful and entertaining. If your blog posts are interesting enough, your audiences would like to link to them and share them with their friends. That, in turn, will generate more traffic to your blog.

Don’t forget to build a relationship with your visitors by responding to comments, being friendly and trustworthy. This will turn your regular visitors into loyal readers that will keep coming back whenever they see any updates in their RSS readers.

Is having many loyal readers enough to guarantee success in affiliate marketing? Not exactly.

Having many dedicated readers is good, but it means nothing in terms of business, if they do not buy anything from you or your partners.

So, the next challenging task is to convert your readers into potential buyers. This is where you would spend most of your time by learning and applying conversion rate optimization techniques such as  persuasive copywriting and landing page optimization.

The final task, and maybe the easiest, is to sign up for an affiliate program.

It is not difficult to find companies or persons doing online business that offer some kind of affiliate program for publishers or bloggers.

Amazon.com offers affiliate programs named Amazon Associates that gives bloggers a chance to earn up to 15% of the total sale whenever a visitor purchases some products from Amazon after clicking an affiliate link in the blog.

You can also sign up as a publisher in affiliate networks such as Commision Junction, Clickbooth, Click2Sell, etc. These affiliate networks basically provide a way for advertisers and publishers (affiliates) to become partners in a specific affiliate program.

It takes serious effort to succeed in selling affiliate products. It goes beyond just putting some affiliate links or banners and hoping visitors will click and buy something. Once you have mastered the basics, you should continue to learn and apply some advance techniques to capitalize on the relationship with your readers.

You Need a Niche for Your Small Business

Have you ever heard the word “niche” ? Do you understand what a niche is and how important a niche is for your small business?

If you answer “no” for one of the previous questions then you should read this article to gain an understanding on how a well-chosen niche can help you reach success  in your small business.

A niche in the business context is a distinct segment of a market or a specialized market.

Why does your small business need a niche?

If your small business do not focus on a specific market, then you must face the competition from the mass marketers, big corporations with huge advertising budgets.

Unless you also have “unlimited” advertising budget, it is clearly not a good way to start a new business, right?

To grow your business, you need to create a unique product or service that will fulfill specific customer needs that have been overlooked by others. It may be a really new product or an existing product that is improved and customized to make it attractive for your chosen market segment.

After choosing a product to sell, you should plan your advertising effort. Because you have a clearly defined segment, your advertising will become more effective. Your small business can use Internet based targeted advertising such as Facebook Ads and Chitika to boost your sales.

In the end, your main focus should be on providing the best quality products or services to become the leader in your chosen area.

Small Business Ideas 101: Selling Custom Products

Starting from this post, I will write a series of articles on small business ideas. Many of us who have desires for starting our own business typically don’t have a clear idea on what business to start. Hopefully these articles will shed light on what business model you are willing to engage in.

The Internet has enabled new forms of business and commerce. E-commerce through the Internet has been around for about two decades, and the amount of dollars spent by online shopping customers has grown significantly. This fact leads to the proliferation of more online shopping websites which are either owned by big corporations or small business owners.

Although there are so many online shops offering any kind of products, opening an online shop is still a promising way to start a small business. The challenge, among others, lies in creating unique products and services so as to differentiate your shop from the existing ones.

You might ask, “What kind of unique products should I create?”. Why don’t you let your customers answer that question? Instead of designing your own products, provide a way for your customers to design what they want to buy from you.

In case you’re still wondering, have a look at Zazzle. This online retailer is one of the best examples of successful business selling custom products. Zazzle allows visitors to upload their own pictures and design their own T-shirts, mugs, shoes and other apparels.

Another example comes from a big company. LEGO, the famous construction toys company, now also jumps into custom product business.

Lego creates a product named LEGO Design byME that allow kids to design their own Lego creation. The design is performed through a software, Lego Digital Designer 3, which is provided for free. You should visit the website yourself to get a better idea.

After examining the examples of custom product business, now it’s time to decide whether this business model is the right one for you. As for the initial investment, it can be modest or somewhat large, depending on the type of products to offer.

Your Success Is Waiting

“Someday my ship will come in”. This is certainly a phrase that many of us have heard or maybe even said at one point or another in our lives. With all the difficulties in life around us every day can we really expect that one day our ship will come in?

Despite the problems that exist, is it possible that perhaps our ’ship’ was at the dock for some time? Is there an argument that presents itself to justify such thinking? What are the benefits that result from such a perspective? Do we meet our expectation?

To begin let’s examine the meaning of the word success. As defined in Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary, success is defined as the attainment of wealth, favor or relief. At first glance it would seem that success would mean we would be getting to live the lifestyle of the rich and famous, but is this the case? Is the money or the acquisition of material goods, an accurate measure of success?

Interestingly, in connection with many business opportunities available on the Internet, it was said that if money were all we were looking for, we need to find a stronger reason for pursuing our interests. When was the last time we went to spend a real vacation? I’m not talking about staying home for a week to do some work around the house, but taking a break for two or three weeks from daily routine? How many times have our children or other family members get to spend quality time with us? Is there a cause or something bigger than us that we would like to contribute, from a mental, emotional, or spiritual point of view?

The point is that if one of the thoughts above are true of us, that maybe, just maybe, our ship was at the dock all the time, and because of the distractions and anxieties of the worlds view of success, it’s never noticed or we’re simply distracted.

As entrepreneurs we do not wait for opportunities, but always looking for ways to create them. Instead of waiting for our ship to come in, we make every effort to swim out of it. Success seems more attainable when we are in the driving seat instead of being driven everywhere by our wishful thinking.

Success is not a fable, but a true reality depending on how it is measured. So, in conclusion, whatever your business is pursuing, if you have a system, follow it. If you need education to understand, use the tools and do it. Stay focused, do not give up. As the old saying goes: ‘If at first you do not succeed, try, try again. Why? Because your success is waiting.

Tips For Promoting Your Small Business

If you have started a small business, then one of your main focuses will be getting customers in who will buy whatever you are offering. That is why, in the early stages of development of a business, it is vital to do proper advertising. This is what will make or break your business. But, you may not have the budget to run TV ads. So, here are some ideas that a small business can use to start drawing in customers.

Business cards are fairly cheap to produce en masse, and you can turn them into an effective marketing tool. You can add a coupon on the back, so that if they bring in the card they will get a discount. You can also advertise an opening party or any other event to draw people in. Just make sure your cards are professional-looking and well designed, with text that will encourage people to visit your business. Then, hand them out as much as possible. Place stacks in strategic locations, and give them to anyone who you think could use your business’s product or service.

Next, you want to make sure you are listed in all of the local business directories. This includes the yellow pages. Make it your top priority to get into the yellow pages – preferably with a large ad. If you aren’t sure how to do that, look in the current edition for a number for the office that you can call to find out information about how to list your business.

Lots of business owners advertise their business on their vehicle. With a proper artist, you can get a fairly nice-looking logo on your car. It may seem far-fetched, but this sort of advertising actually works, and with the right eye-catching logo you will begin to see an increase in the number of visitors to your business.

Public transportation systems offer many chances to advertise in a way that will not be too expensive, but will reach a huge audience. You can advertise your business on benches, bus stop walls, or on buses themselves. It depends on your city specifically, but it is worth checking out the possibilities.

Finally, you can cross-promote with other businesses. This is one of the most powerful methods of advertising, and it is free if you can work out a deal. If you can find another local business that compliments your own, you can offer to promote them if they will promote you. There are many ways that this can work out, and may lead to the ultimate success of your business.

These are just a few ways to consider advertising for your business. However, you should be creative. The most successful businesses are the ones that figure out how to fill markets in new and creative ways.

Determination, The Secret Of Success

When starting a small business  it can be straightforward to look at Richard Branson and the ‘Dragons den’ panel and think that to be a success in business is easy. You could not be more wrong, for those starting a small business the first six months are critical, it is estimated that two thirds of small businesses fail within their first year.

This is why the world is not full of successful businessmen; those who make millions and buy islands in the Caribbean are an exception to the general rule. Even those now living in luxury have struggled at times in their meteoric rise.

Duncan Bannatyne, now famed for his financial worth, is worth an estimated 200 million pounds. In many cases businessmen such as Bannatyne, when starting their small businesses had nothing. For instance after Bannatyne had been dishonourably discharged from the Navy he spent years living a mediocre life until he forked out four hundred and fifty pounds for an ice cream van.

From this small acorn he invested in more vans, eventually selling the business for twenty eight thousand pounds, next moving into the nursing home business and finally the health spa industry. Not all those who are starting a small business will experience these levels of success but he shows how important dedication is to succeeding in business.

Dedication can also been seen in the career of Richard Branson. When starting a small business at the age of just fifteen no one but Branson himself would have predicted the level of his success.

Carving a niche in the magazine industry with ‘Student’ his success moved to music stores and mainly through his own efforts to publicize his brand he now has a music production company, a train company and even a transatlantic airline. A concurrent theme here is dedication; such skillful businessmen never admit defeat and never fail to spot an opportunity.

Another example of why determination is so important when staring a small business can be seen in the story of James Dyson. Inventor of the dual cyclone vacuum cleaner he revolutionized his chosen industry and etched himself out a niche in the world of vacuum cleaners. He recognized the importance of dedication early on in his life when at Gresham’s School in Norfolk as a long distance runner.

Dyson himself has remarked at this stating ‘I was quite good at it (running), not because I was physically good, but because I had more determination. I learned determination from it.’ The importance of determination was vital to Dyson’s success, although being a talented inventor with some amazing inventions it was his determination to drive and market his devices that made him a success.

Dedication can be seen all the way up to the echelons of business; Bill Gates widely regarded as one of the richest men in the world drove a business idea, aggressively marketed his products and vigorously defended any preferable position with gusto. His determination to put Microsoft on top of the world in computer software has led to one of the most influential companies of the last twenty years.

It is clear that when starting a small business determination is essential to success. Firstly you must believe in your business and the service your business provides. Secondly a prerequisite of success is to find a niche and pursue it fervently.

From the examples I have shown here, it is possible to make a success of your business, with the right drive it is possible to emulate the success their businesses have experienced. As all these men will testify it may not be easy but it only takes determination and belief to succeed in commerce.

Imagination: The Real Key To Success In Business

When most people have an image of a business person in their minds the business person representation most often resembles some blank faced accountant generalization, or some sweet faced extroverted sales person, typically this image is of an all work no play serious type.

It is not so often that you might pick up the paper and read of the latest business tycoon with descriptive words reflecting one who is artistic, imaginative and overall highly creative.

Unfortunately the media too often reflects a caricature of a business person as some boring straight faced type unable to think outside of the usual square. Generally they will be represented at nothing but practical and hard lined. Sadly many business people themselves will see themselves as falling into this mould.

The fact is that genuine success in business is the result of some highly imaginative and creative thinking. While corporations are effectively ran using hard guide lines, rules and regulations, the entrepreneur behind it all has had to be one who effectively delves into their imagination and creativity. The more innovative corporations will retain a little of this flavor from its founding father resulting in a model corporation that others strive to be.

Think and Grow Rich a phenomenal book by Napoleon Hill outlines in detail the absolute vital role that imagination plays in business. This book discusses two types of imaginative faculties, that of creative imagination and synthetic imagination.

Synthetic imagination provides us with the ability to arrange old concepts, business models, plans and ideas and turn them into brand new combination. Nothing new may have been created a pattern emerges that creates new and surprising results. An example of this might be a self service grocery store where customers follow the process of shopping which is now very familiar to us, whereas once upon a time grocery shopping was done by presenting your list to a store attendant, who would collect the list items. None of us would remember stores without isles, shopping carts and signs where the job of today’s store attendant is simply to check us out with a bill.

Even today the second model of having the store attendant check us out is changing; some stores are now even offering a service where the customer checks themselves out. Today’s customer does absolutely everything, wheeling the trolley, selecting the goods and items, packing their own bags and even checking themselves out before carrying the bags to the car. Interestingly the result is a happier more comfortable shopping experience.

Creative imagination whoever is a completely different thing again, some might say mystical. Napoleon Hill describes it in his book “Through the faculty of creative imagination, the finite mind of man had direct communication with Infinite Intelligence. It is the faculty through which ‘hunches’ and ‘inspirations’ are received. It is by this faculty that all basic or new ideas are handed over to man. It is through this faculty that individuals may “tune in,” or communicate with the subconscious mind of other men.”

An example of this creative imagination may be seen in the ingenious creation of the original Coca Cola recipe that continued to inspire the entire enormous soft drink industry. There was nothing conservative from these roots, the imaginative marketing campaigns that followed even lent to inspire the modern day image of Santa Clause in his red and white suite. This is rarely mentioned in business relations. We are more often than not led to believe that imagination is restricted to the skills of an artist.

Once a business person or entrepreneur to begin to use more imagination will certainly see many more ways to build profits and make more money creating new channels and exciting marketing campaigns.

Benefits of Operating a Home-based Business

It is no secret that launching and operating a home-based business is an idea that is as hot as wildfire. It’s no wonder; there are loads of excellent benefits to be experienced. Leaving the mainstream work force and telling your employer where to shove it is a concept that has appealed to millions for decades now. With the help of the Internet, it is now becoming an idea that is fully recognizable. Let’s take a look at just some of the uncountable advantages to be gained:

1) You save time and money by eliminating the daily commute. Fuel costs, as we all know, continue to skyrocket as world governments continue to vie for the control of the world’s oil supply. You will not have to buy so much gasoline anymore. Driving your vehicle less also means that you save the costs of maintenance. Saving money is nice, but the time that you save is even nicer. It isn’t uncommon for people that live near large cities to spend a combined 4 hours or more every day just getting back and forth to work.

2) Some of the time that you save on the commute can be redirected towards your family. Family closeness can be greatly increased with an extra four hours of attention on a daily basis. Of course, you will need to direct the time that you’re saving into the development of your new business primarily.

3) Your personal and familial stress levels will be greatly reduced when you no longer have to travel to work every day of your life. The hustle and bustle of congested traffic and constant city activity is enough to drive anybody to the brink of insanity. In the comfort of your home, you are free to dictate the tranquility and serenity of your atmosphere.

4) You become your own boss. As a mature adult, you do not really need somebody barking at you all the time. The freedom of making your own choices and recognizing personal business achievement is liberating to say the least. A great sense of accomplishment can be developed through the successful operation of your home-based business.

5) You are no longer limited to a given salary. When you operate your own home-based business, you become directly responsible for the success or failure of your intended profit margins. When your company succeeds, you experience a direct benefit. When you work for somebody else and perform in an exemplary fashion, it is their company that benefits, not you. One word: Enron.

6) You get to choose your own schedule. We are all aware of the commonly accepted banking hours. When you operate your own home-based business, you can work whenever you want. The key to remember is that regardless of the schedule that you choose, the work still must be performed. Do not confuse freedom of scheduling with the freedom to not work.

These are just a few of the uncountable benefits that are commonly experienced by those who own and operate successful home-based businesses. Begin the process today. Educate yourself concerning the techniques necessary to employ in order to be triumphant in business home-based or not. A lifestyle that is freer and more rewarding is awaiting you!
